Keep Growing Detroit’s 21st annual tour of thriving community gardens and
farms(Summer/Fall 2018).
We The Youth Detroit and DAYUM (Detroit Area Youth United Michigan) met at the Cass Commons before heading out to collect water samples in the area surrounding their school.
This youth-led effort to mobilize around school water issues began in October on Count Day( the day when public schools in Michigan total up all of their students and use the numbers to determine funding), instead of attending school, students gathered for classes on water-testing and youth activism.(Fall/Winter 2018)
MCHR( Michigan Coalition For Human Rights) and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History brought Hollis Watkins, civil rights activist and former organizer with SNCC( Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee) in the 60's, to speak about his book "Brother Hollis: The Sankofa of a Movement Man" as part of MCHR's Founders Day 2018.
Photographs for a story about Negus Vu, co- founder and president of TPA( The People's Action), a group of young Detroiters dedicated to promoting justice and affecting positive change in the city by organizing “shutdown” protests at businesses that violate the trust of the local community, tax foreclosure assistance, self-defense classes for women and children, neighborhood clean-up and beautification initiatives.
